Controlling Fluid Interfaces for Manufacturing

Thermal Fiber Drawing from a Preform

Thermal Fiber Drawing from a Preform enables the mass production of continuous fibers from materials with a high extensional viscosity (e.g. polymers and glasses). Kilometer long fibers with uniform diameters can be achieved through accurate control of the fluid interface prior to its solidification.

Electrohydrodynamic Processing

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD)  processing facilitates control of fluid interfaces using electric forces. Typical examples of such processes are Electrospinning and Electrospraying, both of which are versatile tools for production of nanofibers and nanoparticles that find numerous applications in sensing, filtration and biomedical engineering.

Flow Mold Casting

Flow Mold Casting (FMC) is an emerging scalable manufacturing process capable of controlling the interfacial dynamics and heat transfer of low viscosity materials at micro and nano-scales, leading to unprecedented dimensional accuracy and structural versatility.

3D Printing

Precise control of fluid interfaces is of critical importance in many additive manufacturing and 3D Printing processes, such as Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and Selective Laser Melting (SLM).
